- The enclosed images are X-ray elemental maps obtained by microanalysisi of a specimen. The latter is tyre-tread debris obtained from abrasion by a steel brush. The material is a filled, compounded elastomer, namely vulcanised SBR (styrene-butadiene block co-polymer rubber). It is known to contain Si, S and Zn, among other elements. Silicon belongs to amorphous Silica (SiO_2), which serves as the reinforcing filler; it lowers energy loss in the hysteresis cycle to which tyre rubber undergoes while the vehicle runs. Sulfur forms cross-links between block co-polymer chains. (Much like the S bridges to which the tertiary structure of proteins is due.) Zink is one of the most frequently used vulcanisation catalysts. The simultaneous occurrence of S and Zn in a road dust specimen points to its origin from tyre wear.
